Every child achieves milestones in following 5 domains

• Motor- gross motor and fine motor
• Speech and Language- receptive speech and expressive speech
• Cognitive and Adaptive
• Emotional
• Social

When there is delay in achieving milestones as compared to the peer group- it is known as development delay. It could be global developmental delay (GDD), that is, delay in 2 or more domains or it could be single domain or isolated delay.

Intellectual Disability- Any impairment in cognitive and adaptive functioning.

It could be -mild/moderate/severe

Etiology for GDD or ID could be multifactorial including- genetics, prenatal/natal/postnatal factors, environmental factors, nutritional etc.

Early identification and early intervention can prevent development delay AND/OR decreases its impact in life.
