0–3 Months: Listening & Bonding Stage

What’s happening: Baby learns voices, sounds, and turn-taking.

Activities

  • 1. Talk During Care
    • Describe what you’re doing: “I’m changing your diaper.”
    • Helps baby connect sounds with people.
  • 2. Face-to-Face Talking
    • Hold baby close and speak slowly.
    • Builds attention and early communication.
  • 3. Respond to Coos
    • When baby makes sounds, answer back.
    • Teaches conversation flow.

4–6 Months: Sound Play Stage

What’s happening: Baby starts babbling and exploring sounds.

Activities

  • 1. Imitate Baby Sounds
    • Copy “ba,” “ga,” “oo.”
    • Encourages baby to make more sounds.
  • 2. Sing Simple Songs
    • Songs with actions (clapping, bouncing).
    • Rhythm supports speech patterns.
  • 3. Name Objects
    • “This is a cup.”
    • Builds sound–meaning connection.

7–9 Months: Babbling With Meaning

What’s happening: Babbling becomes more speech-like.

Activities

  • 1. Label Everyday Actions
    • “Eat,” “Bath,” “Sleep.”
    • Helps baby understand words.
  • 2. Read Picture Books
    • Point and name pictures.
    • Supports listening and attention.
  • 3. Encourage Turn-Taking
    • Pause and wait for baby to respond.
    • Builds conversation skills.

10–12 Months: First Words Coming

What’s happening: Baby understands more words.

Activities

  • 1. Repeat & Expand
    • Baby says “ball” → You say “Yes, red ball!”
    • Builds vocabulary.
  • 2. Use Gestures + Words
    • Wave and say “bye-bye.”
    • Gestures support speech learning.
  • 3. Name Familiar People
    • “Mama,” “papa.”
    • Makes words meaningful.

13–18 Months: Word Learning Explosion

What’s happening: Child says a few words and understands many.

Activities

  • 1. Offer Choices
    • “Apple or banana?”
    • Encourages speaking.
  • 2. Daily Repetition
    • Repeat common words often.
    • Strengthens memory.
  • 3. Pretend Play Talk
    • Talk during toy play.

19–24 Months: Two-Word Phrases

What’s happening: Child starts combining words.

    • Encourages response.

25–36 Months: Talking & Storytelling

What’s happening: Child speaks in short sentences.

    • Builds thinking + speech.
  • 2. Sing Action Songs
    • “If You’re Happy and You Know It”
    • Supports sentence rhythm.
  • 3. Everyday Conversations
    • Talk during walks, meals.
    • Real-life language practice.
